big up

This post is dedicated to Nocturnal Disco Aardvark (the nice lad from Bristol and his equally genial girlfriend). Kid put me onto a lot of good tunes, including this Talking Heads track I’d never heard before.

Talking Heads - Pull Up The Roots

run it

Despite the rain, another amazing rooftop party yesterday. We had an awning.

More people asked me about this track than any other I played yesterday so I’ll post it. I like this much more than the original, fits way better into sets.

I never even knew “Sexy Dancer” existed until I bought Prince’s debut album on vinyl at the top-secret record store in SH. Now I’m confused about why this track never made it onto his three-volume “hits” collection when tons of wack songs did. “Strange Relationship” didn’t make that album either!!

Anyway, it’s an unbelieveable track.

Prince - Sexy Dancer

I’ve also included a newly-released remix of one of my top Prince songs - “I Wanna Be Your Lover.” Though I much prefer the slower, funkier original, if this one can introduce the ADD generation to Prince, I’m all for it. Plus I’ve got mad love for the label, Solid Bump Records. Enjoy the filter workout, kiddies.

Holidays in China work differently than in the West. For example, although workers and students can rest next Wednesday and Thursday for the Dragonboat Festival, they need to work this Saturday and Sunday to make up those days. In the States, at least in school, we just add those days onto the end of the semester before summer vacation.

I used to hate this when I taught high school here, but it’s super fortunate for throwing a dance party on a Tuesday night. So come down to LOGO for proper tracks, starting out a little bit disco/hip hop then getting into some harder ish and dubstep later in the night. I’m joined by Nocturnal Disco Aardvark from Bristol (UK) as well as MC One Consciousness.

Can’t get over how amazing the Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti album is. I know I posted “Frightnight (Nevermore)” a few weeks back, but this album deserves another mention. Now go buy it!

magic

More on “Poor in China” later today. Busy eating rice + Indonesian hot sauce, drawing flyers, and playing squash (I’m teaching someone how to play squash, so they’re paying for the court).

News - The second rooftop party is going down on Sunday, June 20th at the same lighthouse on the bund (Atanu). Anyone present for the first will agree, it was an epic, epic getdown.

Another track that takes me back to the days of riding in cars on summer days, listening to the radio. Really not a big Steve Miller Band fan, but who can deny this jam? Can’t wait to confuse a late-night dance floor with this one someday.

POOR IN CHINA

I just had to drop a ton of money on a deposit for a new apartment and a few months rent upfront, so I’m seriously broke for a few weeks.

Not on some bullshit broke like “oh, I can only do brunch one day this weekend/I can only afford two massages this week,” but broke like I need to live off the change in my bedroom that’s accumulated over the past year.

Part sociological experiment, part attempt to get blogfamous and land a MAJORBOOKDEAL and get paid, a new Heatwolves segment, “Poor in China” starts today.

I’m also writing this to show that contrary to what many Chinese believe, all foreigners are not rich.

The plan is to live off RMB20 a day for everything (sans rent). Food, transportation, and recreation. It does not include products that I already have in my house, mostly various hot sauces from Indonesia, and oats. There’s also half a bottle of Absinthe which I’ll probably drink this weekend when I go out.

That’s $2.92 a day
…or 2.44 Euros
…or 2 Pounds

Starting now - this nutritious lunch of egg and Indonesian hot sauce cost 1 RMB (for two eggs). I also ate two bananas (2 RMB) and a strawberry yogurt ( 3.6 RMB).

So that’s 6.6 RMB for lunch, or about $1

Some people just come here for the music, so here’s a chune. I never heard the original until last week.

Gloria Jones - Tainted Love

polar bears, household applicances, and the end of the world.

Throughout my youth, we occasionally had to replace a dishwasher, heater, or other household appliance that reached the end of its years, but never once did we replace a toilet.

When the toilet in my apartment stopped flushing a few weeks ago, the landlord sent over some workmen who tried futilely to fix it, and after five minutes concluded that the toilet should simply be replaced.

A week later, a “plumber” and his fussy wife came over with a brand new throne. I asked dude “so, are you gonna recycle/sell this old toilet?” to which he responded “no, it’s no good. no one wants this. we’ll just throw it away.”

Two weeks later, new toilet, same exact problem. That’s how problems get solved but actually don’t…someday we’ll all live in a sea of broken porcelain, oil sludge, and thin plastic bags, while we hide from the polar bears that hunt us.

I track I always intend to throw into my sets but seldom remember by that point in the night. Next time, next time…

Anyway, it’s by one of the masters of the edit - Pilooski.

Franke Valli & The Four Seasons - Beggin’

clash

Too much dance music… Can’t forget about rock and roll.

I know I’ve posted tracks from London Calling before, but quite often something reminds me of the Clash.

My dad and I had this album on tape. It got us to school in 4th grade in the long car rides long before I could drive. London Calling was there when I learned how to pump iron. When I finally learned how to drive, it stayed in constant rotation in my 1990 Toyota Camry’s tape deck, back when no one, sans disgruntled ex-factory workers, could speak poorly of Toyota.

On a sunny Saturday afternoon in 2002, a curb hit that silver 1990 Toyota Camry and broke its body. The Clash tape and my ghetto dubbings of rap CD’s survived this tragedy.

The Clash - Clampdown

smooth

Not sure exactly how Man Lotion works, but I support its “union tradition” and ability to “suppress each kind of ambush bacterium rapidly.” Also enjoyed the bit about “swimming, especially around the sexual intercourse.” The sexual intercourse sounds like cosmic copulation; an intergalactic pleasure highway of Caligula-esque proportions. I didn’t go on that journey because it cost ten RMB that I wanted to spend on lychee.

These tracks from the new Flying Lotus album sound pretty cosmic too, hence the title “Cosmogramma,” but the pleasure here comes from bass and insane rhythms. A headphone album on repeat for three weeks now, definitely one to buy!
