rubble step

Yet another advantage of urban renewal - more demolished housing sites to play in.

Really though, there’s so much of this going on right now, especially in Hongqiao. I talked with an old guy who said the government couldn’t tear his building down because a broadcasting tower stood directly above it, posing obvious problems. It doesn’t broadcast anymore. Apparently the tower was guarded by soliders in the 60’s. Potentially this small building and tower could stand in the middle of a luxury housing complex sometime in the future.

New dubstep/”street bass” coming out of Philly. Charlie Brown’s teacher wobbles still in full effect, but with some of that old Philly soul worked into those synthesizers somehow…

Anyway, it bangs and builds.

i don’t want to imagine a world without pork

I hope all those right-wing predictions about muslims taking over Europe and the rest of the West don’t come true, because that would mean no more pork, and that’s worse than a robot-controlled future.

A while back I did a post on Rou Jia Mo, a pita stuffed with meat, fat, chili pepper, and possibly cilantro. If done right, one of my favorite Chinese foods. Typically though, most restaurant owners don’t give a fuck and just sell garbage. It’s usually served by Muslims from Xian or Xinjiang, so it’s beef or lamb 99% of the time.

However, Han Chinese don’t follow the word of Allah, and this spot on Yan An Xi Lu near Donghua Daxue comes correct with pork. Hongxiao rou precisely (something like a double-thick bacon pork-chop).

Got the vinyl for the original Busta Rhymes track “Woo Ha!” the other day. The boss of the secret record store told me I couldn’t dig through the crates because of the World Expo, and led me down a neon corridor to an ultra-secret room stacked to the ceiling with record crates.

I think I like this version better though, on the hip house tip.

Busta Rhymes - Woo Haa! (DJ Apt One blend)

too fresh to not post

Heard this on the Darkstar mix over at 20jazzfunkgreats. Perfect track for warm rainy Shanghai.

Dissection

Went to this ridiculous clothing store yesterday on Kaixuan Lu and Xinhua Lu. They only sell terrible sweaters and leisure suits, generally with unfamiliar cartoon characters, but occasionally Tweety appears on some golf shirts.

The attire in the first picture might not seem odd, but it gives me a chance to point out one of my favorite crossovers ever. That shirt on the right, the one for RMB100, it’s fake Jeep gear. That’s right, Jeep. The automaker responsible for the Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, and other retarded bro vehicles, also dabbles in the clothing game. “Rollin to the club/hoppin’ out the Jeep wearin’ Jeep…” It works on so many levels.

Some other favorites. I almost copped a bootleg Sigfried and Roy MASTERS OF ILLUSION 89′ Japan tour jacket. Before the tiger mauling…

A new topic on Heatwolves that may go down every now and then. Or just once. I’ll post a hip hop or house track alongside the sampled track.

On Madvillainy, one of the greatest hip hop albums ever, MF DOOM (the metal faced villain/rapper) and Madlib sampled ZZ Hill’s “That Ain’t The Way You Make Love” for the track “Fancy Clown.”

….Just heard this sample again on Norrit’s excellent “Now Jack Swung” release. Won’t post that one, but it’s on the internets.

trim

Not sure what’s going on with the animals in this picture. Dog in the background likely getting a haircut, but the chicken…not sure what he’s waiting for. I got my hair cut next door for RMB6 (a little less than a one dollar).

The pet industry is booming in Shanghai, especially ankle-biting small-breed dogs. Occasionally I’ll see a giant white cloud of a half-wolf pulling a human on a bicycle down the street in the rain. I heard that having a large-breed dog signifies higher social status because one needs to own their apartment to keep those beasts.

Played at Shelter last night and in the middle of kickin’ dubstep some girl came up and requested something “more mainstream…like Alicia Keys.” Sorry girl, even though you were fine…no.

A lot of hype about today’s artist, Kyle Hall, a nineteen year-old from Detroit. Somewhere between jazz, detroit deep house, and dubstep. This just got released on Hyperdub to critical acclaim.

knowledge

I didn’t actually eat these pig brains.

While I’ve acclimated to snake, duck necks, and chicken hearts, i’m still put-off by the idea of consuming cerebral matter. Perhaps one day…

Big thanks to anyone who came through Logo last night. Kind of went all over the place, from old-school hip hop to dubstep to sexy cosmic disco provided by special guest Taku H from Japan.

But a lot of people came for the bass, which I’ll give you the re-up on right now with this new cut from my favorite producer at the moment - Joker.

Joker - Tron

Come by The Shelter tonight for The Swap Meet. I might rap…

Heavy//Hard Dubstep & Ghettodisco Party Tonight

I’m doing a new monthly party at Logo Bar (13 Xingfu Lu, near Fahuazhen Lu) to connect dubstep’s psychosis-inducing bass, hip hop’s wordplay, and the raw sex appeal of ghettodisco.

Sounds like making babies in a bass-haunted computer scrapyard from the year 2071.

Expect tracks from Joker, Nosaj Thing, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Clipse, Darkstar, Moodymann, and Diana Ross.

And…stupid dumb retarded fresh original edits by Acid Pony Club and live rhymes from MC One Consciousness.

Plus special guest Taku H from Japan/HK (http://www.myspace.com/taku_h)

Starts at 10:00PM, goes late. Mad late.

This track isn’t quite dubstep, but I love almost everything Nosaj Thing does…

fancy clown

Back from Shaoxing, the textile heart of Zhejiang province. Even with its abundant pollution and an overall chaos level that dwarfs that of Shanghai, I’ve returned with a much clearer mind. It’s too easy to forget about the rest of China when soaking in Shanghai’s hedonism.

Short post this morning. Lots on the plate for the day - come to Shelter tonight for The Swap Meet. Dance party with Scandinavian girls and some people playing Street Fighter on PS3//projector screen. I’m gonna DJ dubstep and hip house.

My friends and I absolutely murdered this song at karaoke a few summers ago in LA. Nobody beats the Biz…

And yes, those are cigarettes in this children’s game.

Biz Markie - Just A Friend

ghetto pineapple

It’s almost fruit season again. The lychees and mystery berries will soon migrate back to the mainland. One of the best parts about living in a developing country - folk selling fruits and vegetables on the street for almost free. Prices probably held artificially low by government price controls.

I can pick up a whole pineapple for RMB5 -7 (somewhere just under a dollar), and some dude will remove all the inedible bits for free with his magic knife.

Kinda wild that even though poor people here live with salaries/median incomes wayyyyyy below those of folk living in America’s ghettos, Asia’s impoverished populations have way better access to fresh fruit and vegetables. It’s usually the cheapest food available.

However, their access to Kool-Aid is embarrassingly low.

get emo with it.

This kind of English pervades East Asia. From notebooks in Korea to backpacks and pencil cases here in Shanghai. Judging by the pervasive grammar errors and awkward phrasing, those responsible probably use Google Translate or something similar.

Still sleeping on Acid Pony Club? These kids are the disco/sexy gay house scene in Shanghai. And they produce.

Dem’ French kids just released a fresh pack of edits available here

I’m posting my favorite here, but per request it’s not available for download.

Girl I wanna get in your secret place….
